That looks like it to me, so that’s what I’m going to go with. This image is strong evidence that this “stump” is just a rock.

The large flat vertical formation off to “the stump’s” right looks like it could be part of the same rock. Perhaps over time water laid down sediment and this solidified into rock. Then, a la Garden of the Gods, other forces such as geologic (What’s the Martian word for “subterranean”?) forces, or a Martian tsunami, vertically rotated the entire chunk of sediment and, essentially, stood it up on its end.

If one takes the distance from the left edge of the “stump” to the right edge of the rock on the right as the minimum width of the original sedimentary stone, then it possibly extends one or more times this distance straight down into Mars, maybe several.

When one sees this “stump” in this larger image that shows its setting and its context, the word “(tree)stump” does not come to my mind, but (rock)”shard” does.

After seeing this raw image, I am now of the opinion that the original post of this “stump” meme was an intentional deception. The deception lies in that relevant parts of the original image were intentionally omitted so as to mislead the viewer.

To me, the reason it could not be a stump is that it is much more likely, much much more likely, that it is a rock; enough more likely for the probability that it is a rotting stump to be enough decimal points to the right of 99 against to move it off and out of the range of my suspicion meter.

To theorize that it is a stump requires an unnecessary number of assumptions. This violates Occam's razor .
