Interesting video. Chris did his homework for this one.

Gotta disagree with Chris though. We were determeined to go to Mars early on, and even now, "because it was there", and because everybody wanted to see if there was life there, even at a microbial level. It's wasn't because we knew or suspected there was a past civilization. Maybe there was ... but if there was it hasn't been proven yet. Sure, there are some pictures with some strange looking objects, but in the end they'll just turn out to be eroded rocks. I'm almost totally certain. I hope I'm wrong though.

And no, there were no clandestine DoD missions to Mars. The Soviets were secretive, but NASA never was. NASA is very open even when it's embarrassing ... like the English and metric units mixup.
