check Curiosity Sol 1384 Composite: Landform in the Pahrump Hills

7 years 3 months ago - 7 years 1 month ago #7112 by Todd
This is a composite made from sixteen right mastcam images taken on sol 1384 of a landform in the Pahrump hills. I'm amazed at the mass of layered materials, some with right angles, that appear to make up the "buttes" in the Pahrump Hills. The images were processed from the PDS raw DRCL .img files.

In the first mast cam image there is an object that is a bit of a puzzle. The could be an optical illusion but there appears tp be a rock with a protrusion that hangs out over the sand rather than laying on the sand. I have made a quick line drawing to get across what I think I am seeing. If the protrusion does hang over the sand like this there clearly would need to be more of the rock hidden beneath the sand to stop the thing toppling. But still an oddity I thought.

That reminds me of this object from a left Mastcam image taken on sol 931. A similar thing looks like it is happening here, in this case, it looks like a separate layer that is in some way attached to keep the heavier end up off the ground. This is a version processed from the PDS raw DRCL .img file.

I may have been slightly over zealous with my first posts about this gigapan, but it really caught my imagination and there are some very odd shapes all over the place. Thank you for posting this.

Thank you to everyone who has stuck by the YouTube channel and to all of our admins and forum users here on the channel.   They really have kept the website current while I have been busy taking care of things in my personal life.   I promised that the next video would be a long one and have a LOT to look at.  You can get lost in these Gigapans and I really hope that you do!  I spent a lot of time stitching these together and making sure that they were the best quality that I could get them.  SOL 1448 really has been a goldmine for anomaly hunters and those people who are just hobbiest.  I really hope you enjoy this one and expect much more to come from the latest batches of images!
