file Question about correct colour Curisosity image

I am sure I’ve seen this image somewhere else to make a point about water on Mars. So I am not claiming dibs . But it raises questions about my lack of expertise. I am pretty ignorant regarding photo imaging. So I have a question regarding “levels”. What are they, what are the implications of adjusting levels and what are the pitfalls, and how should they be used? The first image is the NASA original filter of a Curiosity image Sol 45.

mars.jpl.nasa.gov/msl-raw-images/msss/00045/mcam/0045MR0002080160102598E01_DXXX.jpg

Very sandy and brown and a little bit boring. I use the photo lab facility within Serif DrawPlus X5 and press the “Auto-Level” button .

That is all I do; nothing else. And I get this result.

A much nicer looking image that strongly hints at a pool of water. But is that a legitimate inference? Any advice much appreciated.

I normallly do the same, autolevel of colors and sometimes modify contrast and brightness.

Isn't it amazing how the software knows what is being done to the images. Photoshop Auto Color is about the exact same. Not as blue.. But pretty close!

I'm having better luck with Opportunity and Spirit photos by applying the specified filters to their corresponding grey scale images.

This is Opportunity's sundial on SOL 725:

This is the actual sundial:

In Photoshop you can use Auto, but you might have more luck adding a Levels Adjustment Layer and lowering the Output levels a little bit from 255 for the Green and Blue channels. But be sure to leave the Red channel alone. You can do the same in photo lab, on you screen shot don't use the auto button, select the green and blue channels separately and bring down their output levels a little bit.

Great post!!!
