Continuing with Nev-T’s beautiful PDS gigapan of Sol 1077, today’s Context View reveals more of the debris-littered landscape surrounding Curiosity. Over there in the lower right-hand corner is something that needs a closer look.

In Detail View #1 we see the piece in the center that fairly shouts “Technology”! My immediate impression was that of a pressure containment vessel covered with its various fittings and valves. But start looking around a bit.

Going to the Locator Dots we see in the upper left another pipe emerging from the rocks. And what’s with that semi-circular opening in the rock the main anomaly is resting on? Look at the flanges above the main piece; their shape and orientation also say “technology” to my eyes. In particular, the Locator Dot next to the white piece. See how thick this white thing is? Couple that with the bilaterally-symmetrical shape and the radical difference in color from the surrounding geology and it’s easy enough to arrive at the conclusion that this thing simply doesn’t belong.

Notice the dot in the upper right-hand corner. The piece to the right of it shows two parallel plates, giving the appearance of a pulley or windlass.

Finally, in Detail View #2 we get good and close for a final look. That, my friends, is raw technology!

SO, HOW DO I VIEW X3D STEREO?”

Simple! While viewing the stereo pair at a comfortable distance, gently cross your eyes (no eye-strain) until you perceive three images all the same width. The one in the center is in 3D. Just relax into it and your eyes will automatically bring it into focus. Once you have it, you will never forget how to do it. Kinda like riding a bicycle…
